Sydney investment banker Chris Ong, who won the 2007 UNESCO Award of Distinction for creating the Galle Fort Hotel in Sri Lanka, returned to his hometown of Georgetown to contribute to its heritage renaissance. He began preserving and restoring a series of old shophouses and mansions, giving them a new lease on life as boutique hotels. “This is my passion,” says Ong, 59,  who has now crafted five hotels and three residences. “I want this to be my legacy.”
